Editor’s Notes:

Spike ‘The Duke’ Edney is legendary rock band QUEEN’s musical director and keyboardist and is often referred to as the Band’s fifth member. Born on 11th December, 1951, Spike began his early career working with Ben E King, Edwin Starr, The Boomtown Rats, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Ian Hunter, Manic Street Preachers, Beautiful South, Gary Barlow, Peter Green, Joe Cocker, 10CC, and countless more.

Spike’s 34 year association with QUEEN began when he joined them on their 1984 European leg of ‘The Works’ tour, providing additional guitar and keyboards. From then onwards he appeared at almost every show until Queen stopped touring in 1986, appearing on the ‘Live In Rio’, ‘Live In Budapest’ and ‘Live At Wembley’ videos, as well as the ‘Live At Wembley 1986’ and ‘Live Magic’ albums. He also appeared on Queen’s 1986 studio album, ‘A Kind Of Magic’. Following the death of Freddie Mercury, Spike worked with Roger Tayor and Brian May on their various solo projects, forming the band The Cross in 1989 with Taylor and joining The Brian May Band for 2 world tours in 1994 and 1997. Then in 2004 and 2008 Edney joined QUEEN again for their “Return of The Champions” and “Cosmos Rocks” world tours with Paul Rodgers, followed by 3 world tours with QUEEN’S current line-up, featuring Adam Lambert on vocals and most recently the summer 2018 QUEEN + Adam Lambert “Crown Jewels” Las Vegas residency.

The 90s also saw the launch of Spike’s All-Star Band a.k.a. The SAS Band. Since their debut in 1994, Spike and his band have made television appearances and performed at select private, corporate and major public events around the world. Several of those internationally televised concerts (with Spike as MD and his all-star band backing an array of stars) include the 2000 & 2001 Prince’s Trust “Party in the Park” concerts and the 2003/2005/2008/2009 Nelson Mandela “46664” concert for aids.

The artists and musicians who have performed with The SAS Band to date are part of an ever growing collection of some of the world’s greatest Rock and Pop performers and include such names as Roy Wood, Chaka Khan, Roger Daltrey, Lionel Richie, Roger Taylor, Brian May, Paloma Faith, The Sugababes, Gary Brooker, Jack Bruce, Paul Young, Marti Pellow, Paul Rodgers, Madeline Bell, Tony Hadley, Bob Geldof, Lulu, Suggs, Midge Ure, Errol Brown, Graham Gouldman, Kiki Dee, Leo Sayer, Chris Thompson, Toyah Willcox, Ronnie Spector and Fish, to name a few.

Spike quotes:

“I’m very excited to be included at the opening of the new studio space at The Guildhall. Portsmouth has such a rich musical heritage and it’s always gratifying to witness the beginnings of new facilities and opportunities that will further strengthen the musical life of this great city. It’s also heartening to see the enthusiasm that both Andy Grays & co at The Portsmouth Cultural Trust plus Geoff Dorsett and Adrian Collis’s team at the Softrockshow on Express FM have, and I applaud their continued support of live music in the area. More power to them and long may they continue to Rock!!!”

Kingz Of Leon are a Kings of Leon tribute band from the south coast of England. Having a very close resemblance paying lots of attention to how the Kings of Leon sound, we play songs from all 7 albums from as far back as the “Youth and Young Manhood” album through to the latest studio album “Walls”. KOL have been playing lots of gigs up and down the country and also have played festivals including a hugely successful appearance at Victorious Festival in Portsmouth on Saturday August 25th 2018.
